Lazy tabloid journalism

One of the many things that really irritate me about our press is the lazy cliché that seeks to make a non-story into a story. It used to be thought that the tabloid cliché was confined to the gutter press, alas this is no longer the case.

An example of this trend is today's front page story in the Daily Mail. There is a paparazzi provided rubbish photograph of the comedian and actress Dawn French standing next to a man. And that's it. Two people probably walking down a street together. There is no news here. I would imagine that up to six people a day walk down a street together.

The use of pap photographers is something the Mail swore they would stop using after they helped hound Princess Diana to her early grave. Then again money making stories comes before all.

What really stews my cabbage is the headline for this front page scoop. 'Dawn French and her new love'

(Note that the online version of this has a different headline.)

How can a newspaper know if Dawn French loves him?

How can they possibly know what anyone thinks or feels?

This lazy garbage is providing pap for the perceived braindead. I don't believe their readership is stupid but stories such as this gives the impression that they do.

There must be proper stories out there. Lazy bloated stories by lazy media. Their readers deserve so much better.
